Candle care for best burn performance

Follow these simple steps to get an even, long-lasting burn and maximise fragrance throw.

  • Trim the wick before every burn — trim to 5–8 mm. A wick that’s too long creates a large, unstable flame and can shed char into the wax pool. A wick trimmed too short can struggle to stay lit.
  • Allow a full wax pool on first burn — burn long enough for the liquid wax to reach the glass edge. For small to medium candles this usually takes 1–2 hours. Larger candles can take up to 4 hours. If the wax pool never reaches the edge on the first burn the candle will likely tunnel on subsequent burns.
  • Leave a short amount of wax when extinguishing — stop burning when about 10 mm of wax remains to avoid overheating the container. All stated burn times are measured with this reserve left.
  • Extinguish carefully — use a snuffer or the back of a spoon to put the flame out. Blowing can splash hot wax or deposit burnt wick fragments into the wax pool.

Safety essentials

All our candles carry safety symbols and warnings. Follow these rules every time you burn a candle.

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  2. Keep away from flammable items. Avoid curtains, paper, clothing and other combustible materials.
  3. Keep away from children and pets. Curious hands or paws can be badly burned or knock a candle over.
  4. Space multiple candles apart. Keep at least 5 cm between small to medium candles and 10 cm between larger jars to prevent overheating.
  5. Trim wick to 5–8 mm before lighting. Slightly longer wicks up to 8 mm are acceptable but avoid longer lengths.
  6. Never move a burning candle or move it while the wax is still liquid or hot. Wait until the wax has fully solidified and the container has cooled.
  7. Avoid other heat sources. Do not burn in direct sunlight, in front of heaters, or near a fireplace.
  8. Avoid drafts. Draughts cause unstable flames, excess soot and uneven burning.
  9. Burn on a level, heat-resistant surface. Do not use the lid as a coaster and protect furniture from heat damage.
  10. Keep the wax pool clear of debris. Remove match heads, wick trimmings and other contaminants before relighting to prevent secondary ignition.

Short checklist to keep by your candle

  • Trim wick 5–8 mm each time.
  • First burn: achieve full edge-to-edge wax pool.
  • Stop burning with 10 mm wax left.
  • Use a snuffer to extinguish.
  • Burn on a level, heat-resistant surface away from drafts and heat sources.

By following these care and safety steps your candle will burn evenly, smell better and last longer. Never run out, buy more here.
