Wax Melters and 8-hour tealights

Wax Melters and 8-hour tealights

Why You Shouldn’t Use 8-Hour Tealights in Most Wax Melt Burners

Wax melts are a wonderful way to fill your home with fragrance, but did you know that using the wrong tealight can become a safety risk?

One of the most common mistakes we see is people using 8-hour tealights in wax melt burners that were designed for 4-hour tealights.

What tealights should you use in a wax melt burner?

Firstly, they must be unscented and be designed for use in a tealight wax melt burner.

A wax melt burner is designed to work with a specific flame size and burn time. An 8-hour tealight is larger, usually burns for longer because it contains more wax, and often produces a larger, hotter flame.

What happens if you use the wrong tealight?

Wax melt burners are not designed for the larger tealights. Using the wrong tealight can lead to the burner becoming much hotter than intended.

This can lead to:

  • Excessively high temperatures.
  • The wax melt becoming too hot, affecting how the fragrance is released.
  • A risk of wax flaring
  • The burner becoming extremely hot to touch.
  • Damage or cracking to some ceramic burners due to prolonged heat.
  • A greater risk of burns if the burner is handled while hot.

Does a Stronger Flame Mean Better Fragrance?

Many people believe that a bigger or longer-burning tealight will make their wax melts smell stronger.

In reality, if the wax gets too hot, the fragrance oils can evaporate more quickly, meaning you may enjoy the scent for a shorter period rather than longer.

A burner is designed to warm the wax gently—not to overheat it.

What do the Manufacturer’s Instructions Say?

Most wax melt burners include guidance on the maximum size or burn time of tealight that should be used.

Using a larger or longer-burning tealight than recommended means the burner is no longer being used as it was designed or tested.

What is Our Recommendation?

At Our Time Candles of Nantwich, we always recommend using good-quality 4-hour unscented tealights in wax melt burners unless the burner manufacturer specifically states that a longer-burning tealight is suitable.

Using the correct tealight helps:

  • Burn your wax melts safely.
  • Protect your wax burner.
  • Give a more consistent fragrance throw.
  • Reduce the risk of overheating.

With our wax melts, you don't need to overheat them and risk your safety as they have been designed with performance and safety in mind.

Wax Melt Safety Tips

To enjoy your wax melts safely:

  • Always use the correct size tealight for your burner.
  • Never use an 8-hour tealight unless your burner is specifically designed for one.
  • Never leave a lit wax burner unattended.
  • Keep away from children, pets and flammable materials.
  • Allow your burner to cool completely before touching or moving it.
  • Replace your burner if it becomes chipped or cracked.

Safety Comes First

At Our Time Candles of Nantwich, we believe home fragrance should be relaxing, enjoyable and, above all, safe.

Choosing the correct tealight may seem like a small detail, but it can make a big difference to both the performance of your wax melts and the safe use of your wax burner.
