Importance of Wicks

Importance of Wicks

What Makes a Great Performing Candle?

When it comes to candles, most people focus on fragrance or design—but the wick is the unsung hero that determines how well a candle truly performs.

At Our Time Candles of Nantwich, we don’t leave this to chance. Every candle we make is rigorously tested with up to 12 different wick types to ensure the perfect match of wax, fragrance, and vessel. The result? A candle that burns beautifully, smells incredible, and feels safe to enjoy.

Why the Wick Matters

1) A Clean Burn – Free from Soot

The right wick ensures a clean, soot-free burn. A poorly chosen wick can produce black residue on glass, walls, and even release harmful particles into the air. Our carefully selected wicks are designed to give you a pristine, safe burn every time.

2) A Strong Hot Throw

The “hot throw” is the fragrance released while your candle is lit. A great wick fuels the flame at just the right rate, unlocking the full depth of your chosen scent and filling your room with a captivating aroma.

3) A Steady Flame

A stable flame means no flickering, no smoking, and no wasted wax. It creates an even melt pool, reduces fire risks, and lets you simply relax into the warm glow and fragrance of your candle.

Wax Consumption – Getting the Balance Right

The wick also controls how efficiently your candle uses its wax.

  • Too small, and you’ll get tunnelling (wasted wax left behind).
  • Too large, and the candle burns too fast, overheating and losing fragrance.

Our testing ensures the perfect balance of burn time and scent throw, so you enjoy every last drop of wax.

Caring for Your Wick

You play a role too. Before each burn, trim your wick to around 5mm. This keeps the flame controlled, prevents smoking, and extends the life of your candle—so you can enjoy your favourite scent for longer.
